SwimVortex Awards 2013 – World Juniors of the Year/World Junior Coaches of the Year: Ruta Meilutyte (LTU) and Jon Rudd (GBR) and Mack Horton and Craig Jackson (RSA). Meilutyte was already an Olympic and World senior champion and World record holder by the time she arrived as the dominant force at World Juniors in Dubai on the way to four gold medals in a season that delivered three world records. Mack Horton (AUS) had everything to prove in Dubai, having missed world seniors cut by a small margin. And prove it he did in Dubai: five golds and a sixth as a heats relay swimmer

In yesterday’s ‘pageants in the pool’ there was an award for swim photo of the year.

For me, the picture above of Meilutyte’s start should be the run away winner. It’s a potentially iconic image of sporting progress, as a young star brings something to the table which no else has.

I think Horton’s most impressive swim was the 1:45 split he did in the men’s 4×200 relay in Dubai, although the relay didn’t win the gold.
