Tamas Darnyi, Asked “Who You?” At Magyar HQ, Sparks Removal Of New, Now Old, Boss

Hungarian greats - junior to senior waters, Tamas Darnyi and Krisztina Egerszegi to the fore

An extraordinary general assembly of the Hungarian Swimming Federation has booted Gusztav Bienerth out of the presidency less than a year after he took office on a wave of acrimony and a campaign by Katinka Hosszu and others to force change at the organisation. The vote was almost as decisive as it is possible to get: 141-2 against keeping Bienerth. New elections will be held in late September – the 1980 200m backstroke Olympic champion Sandor Wladar the front-runner among likely candidates to take the top seat at Hungarian swimming. In the mix was a sad but amusing tale of Tamas Darnyi and how the medley ace sparked the removal of the blink-an-you-miss-him president.

Losing your job because your receptionist failed to recognize a national icon seems a bit harsh to me! There was more to it of course, but it is somewhat amusing.

One should always be careful when it comes to who one hires. There must be so many competent receptionists out there who love and take an interest in swimming in Hungary … perhaps that’s something for them to think about for the future 🙂 Besides that, I understand that more than one person f ailed to spot who walked through the door… And yes, I think that was the straw … camel’s back etc…
