Heroes of 2012 but this morning one survived (Missy Franklin, centre) and two fell (Allison Schmitt and Dana Vollmer). The hammer dropped early at the US Nationals, with several notable names failing to advance beyond the preliminary heats on the first day of action in Indianapolis. The primary culprit was the 100 freestyle, which proved to be a trip for a few Olympians, including Schmitt, Vollmer and Lia Neal

The art of coaching comes to the fore at such times of mishap on the first morn. It will be interesting to see what the likes of Bob Bowman and Co can cook up as the trials unfold.
