Selecting the best juniors of the year is fraught with difficulties such as working out which youth aces turned up at world junior championships – and which did no – and working out which world junior records broken actually did constitute the swiftest youth times ever in a FINA measure too short and lazy to have kept a proper record of its own history to work such things out before opting to say ‘we’ll only count from such and such a date because history doesn’t much matter to us and is only official when we say it is’. Whatever measure you take, the candidates for best of the year include Taylor Ruck, Kristof Milak, Kliment Kolsenikov, Li Bingjie, Qin Haiyang and Michael Andrew
