Icarus Film-Makers Accuse IOC Of Backroom Deals With Russia For Damage Limitation

Vladimir Putin and Thomas Bach - backroom deals and a Russian snub to the Olympic Movement and Fair Play in the mix [ARD Sportschau still]

The International Olympic Committee is backsliding and “backroom deals” with Russia and its regime ahead of the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next month. That accusation has been made by film-makers behind the “Icarus”, which focused on the scam of the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014: “The more you get into the details of the ban the more you and can see the backroom deals with Moscow [and the IOC”. Meanwhile, FINA is in possession of the WADA-report files on all Russian aquatics athletes linked to doping issues. The question is: what will it do with information certain to make the public domain at some stage?

I believe the IOC is as rotten as a basket of one-year-old fruit. I will never understand for the life of me HOW so many despicable and dishonest people get to the top organizations and positions while most people are BLIND to their dirty doings!!!

Craig Lord

I think it comes down to wilful blindness and remoteness, Richard. Wilful blindness of those who turn a blind eye to protect their own place at the trough, including federations that are clearly voting in favour of bad things and people … and the remoteness of national governments in terms of the ‘autonomy of sport and Olympic rules that insist on such things, for better or worse’ .. and the remoteness of each link in the chain, coaches, athletes and others who see (understandably in many cases but not all) FINA, IOC etc as something far from them and irrelevant to what they do – and from that stance fail to see how they are indeed impacted and how the moment they have an elite success story on their hands may well join the ranks of those who then want (again, understandably) to point out their kid was robbed by a cheat or treated unfairly in some other way. Only then does it hit home for some – by which time… too late, business as usual being the accepted unacceptable.

Richard Ortiz

What you say, Craig, hits a little too close to what is happening here in the USA with our political scene. The IOC is nothing more than another example of crooks at their “best”. That photo of Putin and Bach is disgusting. I thought Samaranch was bad, but we have entered another level of filth with the present hierarchy of FINA and the IOC.
