Just putting forth an opinion here: I think the world cup should offer more difficult but larger bonuses for things that may not be fulfilled, analogous to when Klochova won the 100,000 euro bonus for winning s/c euros, l/c euros, s/c worlds and the olympics in the 400 IM. In one of his books Michael Phelps said something along the lines of “few things gather public interest as much as a check with a lot of zeroes.” I think that’s spot on.

I think FINA (and select sponsors) should offer large bonus incentives for exceptional performances. I think this would encourage more people to go the Katinka route and try a lot of events at a lot of meets. After all, how interesting is it to see Katinka enter every event and do the best at every meet? Not very. It would be much more interesting if Scordstrom entered every event and gave her a run for her money (50 fly, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free, 200 free?)

Just some hypothetical examples:
-$10,000 bonus for winning one event at every world cup meet
-$10,000 for winning 6 individual events at one stop
-$5,000 for sweeping a stroke (all 3 flys, IMs, backstroke events etc)
-$100,000 for winning 25 events on the cup tour
-$1,000,000 for winning 50 events in one year

The important one of those would be the million dollar prize. Most likely no one would get it unless the cup expands, but I think the publicity surrounding the promotion and possible prize would be considerable, and something to bring swimming into the general masses.

Nice ideas McGillrocks. The million should be reserved for a “true” world championship 🙂 … perhaps the world cup could have specific special-status event each year, rotating through the list, in which the top 20 in the world at a given date are invited to race… so, start with the 50m free, get the best 20 in, have a series of rounds day 1, day 2 have a couple of knockouts and then a head to head, winner takes the big pot. The format each year would not have to be the same for each vent (ie no “series of rounds” for the 1500 🙂

McGillrocks,
excellent ideas!!!A million dollar prize will shake the swimming world.Probably will take years(or never happen) to see a 50events win, but would put swimming in notice for YEARS!And we will probably see bignames(Lochte,Yang,Shiwen…) fighting for their life.

Rafael

Probaly never? Katinka could fill her schedule and go for that.. if given enough events for her..

McGillrocks

Craig-

Isn’t what you described already in place, and called the world championships?

Rafael-

Katinka could go for it but would be hard pressed to actually achieve it. She would have to win an average of over six events per meet, which is a significant jump from the 3-5 she’s averaging now. Anyone attempting to get to the half century mark would have to take 7 events at one meet at least twice. Not something that’s easy to do, but perhaps something worth a million bucks

No McGillrocks – the world champs are two per nation. Not the best 20 or 30 from wherever they may hail. There is scope for having an vent with the best – and if one nation has 6 entries or more, that’s the stat of play in world swimming 🙂

Rafael-
McGillrocks is right. You have to put to note the fact a lot of BIG NAMES are out of world cup series. With a million on the way, you will see Katinka swimming against a tapered Friss or Ledecky in 400free, Pellegrini and Schmitt in 200free, the chinese girls in 200fly,americans in 100back,Shiwen in 200 and 400im….i have no doubt she will won a lot of events, but she will have trouble to matching this year results if most of big names come on board.
