W200 Breaststroke: Late Surge Benefits Kanako Watanabe, This Time For Gold

Kanako Watanabe by Patrick B. Kraemer

A late surge by Kanako Watanabe was the difference as the Japanese standout mined gold in the 200 breaststroke; Micah Lawrence takes silver for USA; and a World Champs 1st – a three-way tie for a medal, as Denmark’s Rikke Moller Pedersen, Spain’s Jessica Vall and China’s Shi Jinglin all on 2:22.76

Personal Best

That has to be one of the tightest podiums… well, possibly fastest ever for the top ‘5’… ahem.

The Japanese have been pretty consistent in this event over the past few years… nice to see a win… though would have thought it would be a bit faster.

GBR WINS!!!!!!!!

I was totally wrong when underestimating GBR chances.

I don’t think GBR has ever won major relay gold before (mixed does not count)

Australia is finally back in podum for men 4×200 again, but no thanks to mcKeonD

If not for his horrible 1:47 split, AUS would have overhauled USA

Anon

Gbr women won 4x200m relay when australia touched first but were Dq when petria Thomas jumped in

Iain Clarke-Coast

Superb from GB 🙂

Aussies – poor from McKeon but v. good from Fraser-Holmes

Second (single gender) world relay gold for GB, after the women’s 4x200m in 2001

I forgot about that relay. Wasnt USA also DQed or something, but it turned out the pad was faulty. GBR initially finished third, but USA and AUS got dq ed for no technical fault.

anyway, this is the most exciting 4×200 free men or women in quite a long time.

I love listening to the british eurosport commentators towards the finish of men 4×200

I was concerned one of them was going to have a heart attack or something ..:)
