W100 Free Semis: Cate Campbell Rattles WR Pace, Puts Brake On; Sjostrom 52.78 To Lane 4

Seeking the edge - Cate and Bronte Campbell and Sarah Sjostrom set for the 100 free final - by Patrick B. Kraemer

Defending champion Cate Campbell set the pace at 52.84 looking like a dolphin playing in the big blue. Ease doesn’t really express well enough the art form of the Australia’s sprint motion and flow. And at the turn: 25.35. Then came Sarah DSjostrom on 52.78 for lane 4 in the final in semi 2, Bronte Campbell on 53.00

At this point; it appears the most likely medallists have “separated themselves” from the rest. Heemskerk seems the only real potential spoiler but since her 51.99 4×100 relay split, she’s been “off” for the meet.

Sjostrom or C1 ? If you really had to push me, I’d probably go with Sjostrom (just) on the grounds that she appears to be on PB form throughout this meet whereas C1 has “merely” looked exceptionally good.

Could C2 enter the “Gold” equation ?? Possibly, as she’s the only other swimmer who looks in sub53 shape but I think she’s maybe a touch behind. 12 months time and it may be different as she certainly seems to be maturing into a consistent international performer.

commonwombat,
indeed a hard to predict race.Sarah was in a control race, and Cate shut down really good in the last 15-20 metres.
I don’t who will win, but I hope to see a new textile best.

gheko

Sarah will win this, Cate will go out fast then get swamped at the finish due to the swedes 200m training, Bronte for bronze.

That’s some excuse from Lovtsova. It requires a gold medal level of stupidity to come up with that one.
? Cake baked with steroids in it. Are you kidding?
Really looking to tomorrow’s final; a showstopper. Too hard to call.

Verram

I would pick Sjostrom as well, since she dropped the 200m freestyle and really hungry for the 100m freestyle crown… she will get the 100 free/fly double like Inge de Bruijn did in Sydney 2000

Sisters for minor medals….but more motivation for Rio

aswimfan

My heart goes with C1, but my head goes with Sjostrom.
Either way is good as Sjostrom is also my favorite, and a silver would motivate C1 more for Rio and break WR.

As for Natalia Lovtsova.

LOL.

That excuse is sooo conventional and traditional. At least entertain us. Be inventive, such as:

– The GHC shop assistant didn’t tell me it had banned substance
– My chiropractor injected me with drug…heellpp
– I ate steak, and the cow was injected with steroid
etc

Personal Best

It can go either way, but Cate has surprised in the past so she’s sure in with a chance.

Sjostrom’s form though is frightening. She’s still got it midway through the meet but Cate’s best in the 100 cannot be forgotten.

I’ve just watched C1’s semi swim:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x30lxhr_women-s-100m-freestyle-semifinal-1-cate-campbell-world-championships-kazan-2015_sport

Even if it’s only a semifinal swim, she made the defending Olympic Champion look like an age grouper.
in 100.
freestyle.

You don’t get to see that too often.

aswimfan

and I see that C1’s start has not improved. ugh.
She was noticeably last off the block and last hitting the water.
Her RT is still 0.83, slowest by far among all semifinalists, especially compared Sjostrom’s 0.69 or he sister’s 0.67

She will not win 50 with that start. No way Jose.

Jacco, I thought you were going to fix that.

Verram

Call me crazy would it be such an upset if Bronte Campbell is the one who ends up taking the gold medal if she has the swim of her life in the final… She has relatively a better start/reaction time than Cate and has improved her racing skills and finishing endurance as well.

But my money is still on Sjostrom on this occasion, she wants this, and she’s a pro in sprint races.

aswimfan

I think this year is not Bronte’s year just yet. She is still not as strong in the second half as Sjostrom, and her easy speed is still behind C1.

But I agree, next year may well be the year of surprise.

Cate Sarah. Bronte
