USA Swimming Shifts Pre-Rio Camp From Puerto Rico To Atlanta Over Zika Fears

USA Swimming has moved a pre-Olympic training camp from Puerto Rico to Atlanta over concerns about the threat of the Zika virus. The camp will now be held at the Georgia Tech aquatic centre where Janet Evans made her last Olympic stand back in 1996, where Michelle Smith de Bruin claimed three golds and a silver before her fall from grace; and where USA swimmers can be in the time zone of NBC Olympic colonialism

In an era when a woman can have a quite long professional athletic career in many sports, it seems common for a number of women make plane with their partners to try to schedule pregnancies around major sporting events. I suspect that a lot of plans to ‘pull the goalie’ after Rio for women in all sports disciplines are currently being rethought because of the Zika virus.

Glad to see USAS taking steps to try to protect athletes and their current and future families.
