U.S. Olympic Trials: Chase Kalisz & Ryan Lochte Set Up 400 Medley Showdown

Ryan Lochte, by Peter Bick

The opening day of preliminaries at the United States Olympic Trials is always intriguing, with little wiggle room available for the athletes seeking a spot in the championship final in the trio of 400-meter events on the schedule.

That 56.84 from Kelsi was a statement. She started out really fast, and she finished strong as well. I think her 200 SCY time indicated that she indeed can close.
Vollmer was long on turn and finish.
These two will close the deal tomorrow.

So far (until the end of men’s 400 free fast heats), this US OT has been faster than in 2012. A bunch of fast men’s 400 free at 3:47-48, the question is if any one f them will be able to bring it to 3:41-43, which is required to be competitive for a medal in Rio.
Dwyer looked very strong throughout so may get his first berth tonight.

The issue for Worrell will be how much if any “top-side” she has on this heat swim. Remember that this IS a 0.5sec PB in itself and she has shown herself in the past (ie 2015 PanAms) to have been slower in finals. We will have an answer tonight. Unless everyone else bar she and Vollmer were completely bluffing, they do look the obvious qualifiers.

400IM seems to be playing out to script with Lochte & Kalisz significantly ahead of the field. A good PB from Litherland but does he have much more than that ?

M400free by contrast answered no questions with a raft of 3.47s and a 3.50 making the final.

I’m very impressed with the organization of this US trials. It is running very smooth and tight and no glitches or problem so far. That’s with 1,600+ swimmers.
The commentators are also great! very knowledgeable and on point! Very very good. Keep educating the viewers in during slower heats of 400 IM

I love how Ariana Kukors is commentating on women’s 400 IM, she’s giving out useful info.

I know that this is still prelims, but Beisel’s fly didn’t look to have improved. She won’t have a chance against Hosszu if she’s way behind after fly.

Fede 1.54.55 http://www.swimvortex.com/federica-pellegrini-lioness-of-verona-roars-yet-154-55-her-fastest-200-in-textile/. This will really get Ledecky fired up to respond later this week

The women’s morning prelim races were pretty close to what I anticipated. On the flip side the men’s heats were a bit quicker than I expected.

Barnabas Mandi

aswimfan, nobody has a chance in IMs.
