I’m so proud of Laura Sogar, who represents a team where I used to coach (Bluefish, Massachusetts) in LC! Her winning time tonight was a lifetime best, and hopefully will motivate her training leading into the Olympic year. Thanks for mentioning her in your article, Mr. Lohn!

Going by Phelps 200br time I don’t have any doubt he could’ve swum a faster 400 than Seto either…

Wow! Good swim by Michael.

I would consider this his most surprising time. It’s a world class time an event he has no history in. Swimming this in the heats at world he would have been tied first reserve for the semifinals. Faster than Peaty, Tateishi, Van Der Burgh, Snyders…

In 2007 worlds this time would have placed fourth in the final.

He should compete for Australia in 200m breastroke.. He would be ranked Number 1 here with that 2:11s given our lack of breaststrokers in that event

Come on guys! Don’t overdo it here… This is nowhere near a world class time compared to what Phelps is used to do in other strokes. He wouldn’t even have made it to semis in Kazan. Nevertheless, it is quite a performance for a guy who’s considering breast is worst stroke! Also, I agree that this bodes extremely well for his 200 IM (I seriously doubt that the 400 is gonna be part of his program next year).

‘Nowhere near a world class time’ – would’ve been 17th in heats at World Championships. That by definition is world class!

Actually re-reading, ‘compared to his other strokes’, you’re right. But you can understand the excitement :).

IMO the best/most surprising time from a non-special event was his 53.01 100Back in Indianapolis in 2007, 0.03s off the world record Peirsol had setting winning World Champs in Melbourne. And it was after a 200 Freestyle too.

François Messer

I definitely get the excitement… But was WAY more excited with 100/200 fly and 200 IM. There is probably no question that if Phelps would focus more on the breaststroke he would be able to go down to a 2:08… As for the backstroke, well you just said it. He’s an insane athlete! 53.01!!!
