Two Inside WR Pace, One Race: Kromowidjojo Hits Back, 22.93 & 1st Sub-23; Sjostrom, 23.00

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands by Patrick B. Kraemer

Rare these days to get two inside world-record in one race. It just happened on day 2 at the Berlin round of the World Cup. Women’s 50m freestyle: Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) just became the first woman ever to crack 23sec over two laps short-course freestyle, on 22.93 – and Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) almost followed her: 23.00.

When WAS the last time two swimmers broke the world record in the same race?

Craig Lord

There have been a couple of s/c records set when the second home was also inside the old mark in past few years, would have to check which one was last… and have no time to do that now 🙂 There were a few in Rome, 2009, l/c inc relays and Peirsol and Irie 2100 back; Phelps and advice 100 ‘fly etc at a time of shiny suits

Ger

Ledecky and Friis did it in 2013 in the 1500m.

Good one, Ger… yes… I feel sure there was something at s/c worlds 2014 but no time to check …
