Tom Daley Has A Boyfriend; Asks ‘Accept Me For Who I Am’, He Asks In Video

Tom Daley on the cover of his own book "My Story"

“In an ideal world, I shouldn’t be doing this video – it shouldn’t matter.” Those are the words of British diver Tom Daley today in a YouTube video in which he reveals that he has a boyfriend. As Daley indicates, his ‘news’ is not news worth reporting in itself. But the fact that the Olympic bronze medallist and former world champion has chosen to talk about his sexuality may help others to find the courage to be who they are in a world yet heavy on judgement of private matters

Just to clarify – he didn’t say ‘I’m gay’. His video indicates that he is bisexual, he made it clear that he ‘of course still fancies girls’.

Just to clarify – yours is the last comment we will take on definitions along a spectrum of definitions on sexuality. Thanks

JMAN

The guy is 19 years old. Who cares about a 19 year olds romance? Typical of most 19 year olds (hetero, bi, gay, whatever) it is unlikely to last. Needs to retell his story when he is 26.

Craig Lord

JMan, some context in the life of that particular 19-year-old: Tom often gets asked about girlfriends and even ‘preferences’ by British media – I imagine he’s done what he has done today and drawn a line marked ‘not secret but private’ so that he can live honestly and avoid the worst accesses of the media while getting on with a career as a diver – and a diver who appears on a TV show in Britain – without constant questions and speculation.

Not sure this is a swimming story.

It’s disappointing, Craig, that you’ve succumbed to the anti-Russian propaganda. This video would cause no trouble.

Craig Lord

Felix, we cover diving too, albeit mostly on the biggest of occasions only. I see some issues with the Russian situation as far as discrimination goes but also see that the law is related to minors … a side issue and one I’m not well-read in, as yet, to be honest. I have removed the reference.
