The star turns of the 2017 World Championships (clockwise from left): Caeleb Dressel, Adam Peaty, Sarah Sjostrom and Katie Ledecky - all images by Patrick B. Kraemer

The racing is done, the USA is the top team, bolstered by the two medal-winning giants of the meet Caeleb Dressel, with 7 golds, and Katie Ledecky, with 5 golds and a silver. Further analysis down the line. For now, some numbers… The performances of the championships
25.95         1025    Adam Peaty             GBR    50m breaststroke  WR semi
51.71          1010    Sarah Sjostrom      SWE   100m freestyle       WR 4×100 relay lead
Dressel matches the all-time single-championships record haul of seven golds medals, collected by Michael Phelps at Melbourne 2007, however, Phelps’ tally is the greater score: it included 5 solo events and 2 relays, while Dressel built his seven achievements on three solo events and four relays that include the two mixed events that have been added to the world-championships program since Phelps swam his last race in world-title waters back in 2011.

Helped by relays more so than Ledecky, Simone Manuel with five gold and a bronze.

Yes, John, there’ll be quite a few multi-medal counts that bear no comparison to the thread of history if FINA remains in the hands of idiots.

4 x 50’s to come? I expect it at some point.

Eight relays, now, and seven at the Games. 42 races in all and 35 at the OG. Is Fina trying to equal athletics ? They can add more relays (4×50) or try 150 m races… And one day someone is going to win 10 golds. Does it make sense ?

While the 4×50 sprint relays are tons of fun for swimmers and fans in USA domestic waters, I’m really not sold on them at the bigger global meets.

For variety, some US university relay meets do a 3×500 yard relay, but I suspect that FINA would find that a 3×400 long course equivalent is only really popular for tv purposes in Australia.
