And the price of that gold medal was a wrecked shoulder that was just never right again despite surgery not too long later. Would have been interesting to see what she could have done for a career if she’d stayed healthier.

Hyman’s emotional outburst reminds me another one that happened to Bob Beamon. His strange looking jogging immediately after jump with the following cataleptic seizure says that the nerve system was at high level of excitation that can be a necessary requirement for extraordinary achievement. It is very unusual to get at such state more than once.

Eugene

Actually Sydney games were not the first of this century, since it started on 01/01/2001 🙂 2000 was the last year of the 20th century.

Yes, I’ve heard that before Eugene – and chose to ignore it as much as I ignore the maths that tells me I can never reach out and touch the wall because if you keep halving the distance I’ll get close to it ad infinitum … Of course, feel tells me I touched the wall and that’s good enough for me: and Sydney started with a 2, so that’s this century for me 🙂

I love math and science and geography , but I am on CL team on this. 🙂

Sydney Olympics just felt modern and the standard of swimming was just on a completely different level than the previous Olympics, Atlanta.
Sydney definitely felt like a new century compared to Atlanta.

🙂 aswimfan. I just know that Mr and Mrs Creation must have been holding hands for at least a little while before the Big bang, so I’m working on the basis that Year 0 wasn’t nothing 🙂
