History tells us that towering achievement is bound to be surpassed. We can never tell if that will be tomorrow or decades from now, beyond the lifetimes of some of us. Take Ian Thorpe and six gold medals earned at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka. Just six years on and on this day in 2007, Michael Phelps matched the six-gold record and was about to go beyond on his way to being “The Greatest”.
