Seventeen years ago to this day, Ian Thorpe led a celebration of extraordinary swimming and events on the opening night of finals at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It was the Games that also brought us Eric the Eel, as named by Craig Lord. While the site editor is away on sabbatical and we undertake site maintenance, here is his memory of that special night in Sydney 17 years ago.
