Crannman

Not a bad time by Yang , but he will have to be back in the 1:44s if he wants to win this event in Kazan…

Craig Lord

I think many people no longer care what Sun Yang comes up with, Crannman. Wave of ‘so what’ and worse comes in by mail every time he swims now. It seems that he and those around him shot his goose; respect and trust lost and hard to win back…

Craig Lord

To the reader who refused to heed the warning and is no longer with us: Trimetazidine remains in 2015 wada code and is to be found here:
S4. HORMONE AND METABOLIC MODULATORS
5. Metabolic modulators:
Activators of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), e.g. AICAR; and Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor δ (PPARδ) agonists e.g. GW 1516
Insulins
Trimetazidine

Carlo [this reader has been locked out for continuing to post falsehoods when asked not to – this response was to the initial comment from ‘carlo’ that said he had not lost trust in Sun Yang – Ed] – I, for one, will attest that I’ve lost trust and do not care. I saw the time this morning and my initial instinct about it ranking No. 1 was shrouded in doubt. No matter what happens going forward, he will forever be viewed (at least he should be) with doubt over what took place and the fact that there was undue secrecy surrounding the situation.

aswimfan

I also have lost and do not care.

From what I read about trimetazidine, apparently this drug basically enables you to do insane sets without your heart going into failure.

Now we know how Yang got the crazy endurance and speed to do that 25 seconds in the last 50 of 1500.

aswimfan

I meant I have lost trust and I do not care about Sun Yang’s result.

AsianFan

Why insulin is banned? What if you are diabetic like Santana.

aswimfan

Here’s the rampant use of trimetazidine TMZ:
“TMZ can be used by athletes to improve physical efficiency, especially in the case of endurance sports”
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/dta.1755/abstract

“Controlled studies in angina patients have shown that trimetazidine increases coronary flow reserve, thereby delaying the onset of ischemia associated with exercise, limits rapid swings in blood pressure without any significant variations in heart rate, significantly decreases the frequency of angina attacks, and leads to a significant decrease in the use of nitrates.”
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimetazidine

Now we know how Sun Yang was able to do his insane sets and not dead.

Craig Lord

Asia Fan. I have edited out that last part of your comment: if it makes no sense to me it will make no sense to most others, I would imagine. As for Insulin, it is covered by Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE), like some asthma drugs etc. Trimetaz’ is not covered by TUE.

Craig Lord

Asianfan – I deleted that last comment. Please do not leave speculative comments about people who died. It is inappropriate and is not welcome here.

aswimfan

Asianfan,

if you are diabetic, you can use insulin under TUE.

AsianFan

What if you heart irregularities under duress!

Craig Lord

Quite right John. If a doping suspension does not cause you to read up on your anti-doping rules, including the bits that tell you that you cannot work with a banned doctor/A.Another, then nothing will.

Craig Lord

Asian Fan – when that happens, a medical test should be able to ascertain if an athlete is fit to withstand what a sub-15min 1500m swimmer must withstand to be that good, day after day, week, month, years etc. Heart issues have led to some swimmers being forced to retire. If the heart is too sick to endure what is required to train and compete without medicine, then it has to be asked whether that swimmer should be training and competing in elite waters at all. We’re not talking about masters in their 70s here… this is supposed to be (and mostly is) about the fittest folk on the planet.

Gil

Trimetaz could be used by every athletes before 2014.There was nothing unfair.

Craig Lord

Gil – the substance was taken in 2014 in the case in question … and the reason WADA added it to the list is because experts deemed it unfair.

roy

i tip sun yang to break the 400 free world record, the guy is awesome.

Belgium_kangoo

I also do not care about Sun yang anymore ! and I sincerely hope he doesn’t win big championships again …

The rule should be simple: if caught you are banned from ANY professionnal or amateur sport races for the rest of your life (maybe some slightly lighter sentence if there is a real doubt as to the willingness to cheat or not) …

How can you ever trust the athlete again after a doping test ?? even if he (or she) claims they didn’t know and so on, I will never believe in an athlete once caught … and that goes for all theonesthat were caught recently (yang, park, efimova) but all the other older ones (cielo, …).

I’m excited by Phelps, Lochte, Le Clos, Mack Horton, Hackett coming back, the 100 free womens for Kazan … but not about convicted cheats who are ruining are sport (with the help of their FINA friendswho hide the truth )!!

LucyLovesWater

Sun who?

Who is pulling the strings

Sun Yang is a drug cheat, his doctor is beyond questionable and his coach is a fraud, liar and a bully.

What an awesome combination!!! I wonder if Sun Yangs doctor is the one that treated Brian King for his cancer and his open heart surgery

Who is pulling the strings

Sorry Craig – “allegedly”

a1960swimmer

I do not know how many top swimmers read this website. I would like to suggest that if Sun Yang makes a podium at World that the rewarded swimmers would boycott the ceremony. I strongly believe that clean swimmers should speak out against such injustice.

LucyLovesWater

a1960swimer … I can understand why the majority of clean swimmers keep their personal opinions to themselves when it comes to speaking out against drug cheats.
I remember Shirley Babashoff being treated poorly when she spoke out against the East Germans in the 70’s.
WADA and FINA must act in the strongest possible manner.
I’m not going to Kazan this year because I’ve had enough of the ‘slap on the wrist’ mentality when it comes to drug cheats.
I’m not the only one in my group of supporters who will be boycotting Kazan as spectators.

roy

sun yang is still going strong despite everything.

Viva la Bang

This is bullshit, should be out for 2 yrs for drugs and cover ups. no respect for him anymore!

A1960swimmer

Lucyloveswater… I agree with you but I believe that swimmers need to speak out. Someone like Phelps would have a stronger impact than FINA. Babashoff had a lot to loose, Not Phelps, Agnel and many other superstar swimmers. We only hear from athletes like Amstrong who preach after the fact.

A1960swimmer

Athletes like Tommie Smith or John Carlos had the courage to speak out. They Lost a lot. Are we going to have someone lead the fight against cheat in sport? I hope so. To watch Marion Jones speaking about drug and sport makes me nauseous.

pol

All cheaters should be banned.

beachmouse

I do think there is a continuum of doping offenses. Not all drugs have equal value when it comes to being PEDs. On one and, you’ve got the steroids and testosterone which can only really show up when there’s an attempt to use them specifically to improve. Park, I’m talking about you.

On the other end, I’m okay with a 3-6 month ban for some substances that are very commonly present in over the counter medications sold in many countries. Should Fred Bousquet really have been banned for life from the sport because he didn’t realize that the over the counter bum cream he bought had a different formulation in a different country? Should a new parent have to worry about having something from a prescription diaper cream in their blood stream if they change their child’s diaper without gloves?

Craig Lord

beachmouse, the point is taken about life bans being like the hangings of folk subsequently proven to be innocent – and I think Belg’ Kang’ alluded to a let-out clause being required etc. Also worth noting that it is not just about the athlete but the entire chain of people involved – and a system that dos not follow through where it could and should. In the case of Sun, other penalties should have been imposed: the CSA should have been fined for failing to handle the case properly and failing to report the case when it should have done, for example. Sun should be fined, too, for continuing to work with a banned doctor a a major international event; the doctor should have his suspension doubled, which is called for in the WADA Code. But none of that is happening. Sun was allowed to race to 3 gold medals at the Asian Games with the banned doctor by his side – and no-one in the anti-doping regime bought it wise to insist on six months and remove those results. In effect, Sun got off scot free and has learned nothing if no that the system isn’t serious. he only thing he has lost is access to AUS podium funded centres – and in a roundabout way, he’s still in touch with the world. The system is weak and is failing clean athletes.

LucyLovesWater

a1960swimer … Agree with you totally. Hopefully something will change soon. It is quite disheartening to watch such a great sport turn into a sham.

aswimfan

I was involved in fierce discussion here where I defended some Chinese swimmer who finished extremely strong in 2012 London because there were accusations flying around against her. I believe in proof before accusation.

But after Sun Yang’s positive test to trimetazidine, I am not sure anymore what to think of that.

AsianFan

CL
I understand using altitude tent or hyperbaric chamber of which hypoxiated inducement can legally increases RHB akins to’blood doping’ is cloudy. Many athletes are benefiting from these high tech chambers in their living environment. Thus creating unfair competitions and also side effects could be irreversible!

Craig Lord

AsianFan – none of which excuses taking banned substances that achieve the same effects faster and in more certain fashion and sometimes at particular moments. The arguments for what may be wrong are no arguments for allowing other things that are wrong and in the rules as such.

aswimfan

Interestingly, Sun Yang has not died even though he has stopped using trimetazidine which he claimed for his heart condition which he had depended on for years. LOL.

so Sun Yang keep on training as elite athletes, stopped using the drug essential to keep him alive during intense training, and still not dead or not sick?

Yeah right.

Does NOT COMPUTE.

AsianFan

Aswimfan

For all you know TMZ could be just a placebo or myth just like aspirin is good against heart attack and cancer. He was all ill advised and foolish to use TMZ for 1500m to prevent ‘drowning’.

beachmouse

In the absence of any indication that ‘Sun has had a minor surgical procedure and has happily returned to training without defibrillator on the pool deck’ ala USAS’ reporting on Dana Vollmer (first thought to have long QT) I’m inclined to assume that there’s a Chinese version of Dr. Ferarri* out there more than glad to make sure Sun has all the correct paperwork for TMZ filed now and he’s back on the TMZ.

When the money is big enough, and the Chinese have invested a lot in Sun, people can and do find a doctor who will lie for them.

* The man behind massive doping programs in cycling and other endurance sport, and a name now so toxic that an Italian figure skater is currently under a doping ban for merely driving her cross country skier boyfriend to an appoint with hm.
