Kazan will be a dress rehearsal for Rio obviously, I think Belmonte will pull off a historic upset in one of her key events, most likely the 400im

Please! Beating the defending Olympic champ/ world record-holder not to mention Hosszu and whomever wevwent ( Beisel?DiRado? Sarah Henry? Ledecky? ( Yes I know she’s a long shot but…)

200 fly maybe but again there’s Hosszu and whichever PRC girl gets picked and Maybe even Throsel or even Ellen.

And let’s not kid ourselves about the 400- 800 frees.

I am simply at a loss over what’s the big deal w/Belmonte Garcia? How many lcm wrs and/or World Championships golds has she won?

Bill – thanks for your April Fool. Just in case you weren’t joking when you suggest that only gold at Olympic and world l/c level and a world record count (wiping out the vast majority of women on the USA team, the AUS team, among many others) … and everyone who hasn’t got that to their name is ‘no big deal’. In Spain she is one of the most successful women athletes all-time, all sports. And in Europe she has consistently been one of Europe’s top challengers for the past 5 years I don’t think the following in any way mediocre and somehow unworthy of the odd 400-word article on a swimming niche website:

Olympic Games
Silver 2012 London 800 m freestyle
Silver 2012 London 200 m butterfly
World Championships (LC)
Silver 2013 Barcelona 200 m butterfly
Silver 2013 Barcelona 400 m medley
Bronze 2013 Barcelona 200 m medley

European Championships (LC)
Gold 2008 Eindhoven 200 m medley
Gold 2012 Debrecen 1500 m freestyle
Gold 2014 Berlin 200 m butterfly
Gold 2014 Berlin 1500 m freestyle
Silver 2012 Debrecen 400 m freestyle
Silver 2014 Berlin 400 m medley
Silver 2014 Berlin 800 m freestyle
Bronze 2008 Eindhoven 200 m butterfly
Bronze 2014 Berlin 400 m freestyle
Bronze 2014 Berlin 5 km open water

Craig lord, mireia isn’t the best spanish sportwoman of all time.she have to win olimpic golf medal. Arancha sanchez was the best becouse she went number one of the WTA for a long time and she won a lot of grand slams. But i think mireia is a star in the world of swimming , she has been the better in butterfly the last three years and she could win olímpic medal in five events so diferent as 800free 200 butterfly 400 free and the two events of medley.i think she will be below 4.30 in 400 im this year.

Tono – I never said she was: “In Spain she is one of the most successful women athletes all-time, all sports”.

In Beijing , “only” 2 American women won individual gold at the Olympics ie Coughlin and Soni, Olympic gold is the Holy Grail of the sport, the most sought after achievement ; several high profile athletes have had successful careers with out Olympic gold. Belmonte will be on the starting blocks in rio with a very realistic gold medal chance in her events; its folly to suggest swimmers of a certain nationality will be a lock for gold before Olympic trials have been swum even. Olympic games full of surprises. …….

I must say I have come to enjoy Bills posts on here. It always encourages one of the readers to bring out facts and figures that make a read more interesting.

Craig – the notion that he was expressing a joke due to April fools was a rather witty comeback. And i applaud you for rallying those fast facts.

She certainly is one of the favourites in many an event, and has proven herself time and time again.

While i do agree that she now needs to step up at the big show, it is only because her list of achievements needs to be completed with the highest honour.

American woman have always been formidable, most definitely, and have a wonderful fighting spirit but i think it would be foolish to count out Ms B in anything that she decides to swim.
