This week marks the 55th anniversary of swimming at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome; the days of Fraser, Rose, Konrads, Devitt, Larsson, controversy and U.S. fightback; washed away by Australia in 1956, American gladiators fought back – no nation would top the USA again until 1988, when GDR women won 11 gold medals, buoyed by State Plan 14:25. A very interesting piece. Some of the same “state of the ark” AUS Swimming officials of the Rome era were still in positions of high authority at the start of the 80’s …. still with similar mindsets.
