Usually, Missy Franklin comes storming down the last lap to beat her foes in the 100 backstroke. En route to her first world title in the event, the American went wire-to-wire to claim gold in 58.42; Australia’s Emily Seebohm captured the silver medal in 59.06, with Japan’s Aya Terakawa picking up the bronze medal in 59.23 – a repeat of the London 2012 podium

Congratulations to Missy! Looking at the schedule, I hope she will drop out of the 50m Back to solely focus on the 200m Free final. She will need every ounce of her energy to compete and win this event.

She is always a pleasure to watch swim !! she loves her swimming and the swimming world loves her =) !!

Disappointed Seebohm couldn’t quite get up to her tbh (so unlucky losing Olympics despite going faster than all previous gold medallists… !! ), but still a solid win for Franklin. Fingers crossed Missy improves for her favourite event; will we actually get a sub-2:04? Heck, you wouldn’t bet against her 🙂

@Craig Lord

On BBC2, Becky Adlington said something along lines of Spofforth’s WR having been swam “not in a high-tech suit”. Was she mistaken?

Gemma sat the world record in a Speedo LZR Racer, so it is a high tech suit, but not one of the 100% polyeurethane ones.

… Gemma swam in a LZR Racer, the same suit she wore at the 2008 Olympic Games… she improved 1sec in a year beijing to Rome and along with Michael Phelps was the only swimmer in Rome to set a world record for gold in the 2008 suit with 50% poly panel… maybe that’s what she meant. All in 2009 wore suits which are now banned.
