There was no need for Olympic champion Simone Manuel to show us what she’s got in the 100m freestyle heats as USA nationals got underway in Indianapolis this morning, a mid 53 enough to sail through to lane 5 for the showdown, lane 4 gone to Mallory Comerford, one of two breakers flexing their muscles in sprint events at the outset of battle. If Comerford axed a chunk off her 53.9 best for a 53.26 ticket to a taste of racing Manuel at her meanest in domestic waters, then peek across the lanes and schedules to the men;s 100m freestyle: Zach Apple, 20, took a crunch out of his best for a 48.14 passage to centre stage.
