M800 Free: Euro Mark For Greg Paltrienieri; Mack Horton Bronze; Sun* Keeps Crown

Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) by Patrick B. Kraemer

In the end, Sun Yang*, of China, was not to be beaten but the young guns, buoyed by belief in the form of James Guy and a 200m free world title yesterday, had a go and ended up on the podium: Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) on a European record of 7:40.81, Mack Horton (AUS) on 7:44.02, the third swimmer home with a clean record Connor Jaeger (USA), on 7:44.51. And then another teenager: Henrik Christiansen on 7:45.66 for a Norwegian record

Thought for a second Paltrinieri could do it. It did look tougher than usual for Sun; Paltrinieri has to have a good chance of swimming the kick out of him in the 1500.

Sun ties Hackett’s record of 7 freestyle gold medals at the WACs.

He also ties the record shared by Popov, Hackett, and Thorpe with his 9th global long-course freestyle title (Olympics and WACs combined). I agree with Felix that he could very well have to wait another year to make that 10.

Horton was 1.65 sec faster than his time at the junior WRs 2 years ago. That’s not very good progress at his age. I’m not sure what his pb was. Either way he did well to take bronze in this field.

an * to all that Lennart. Not just the doping but the era … with all such things, 2001 changed the possibilities that were not available to greats of the past who did well to stretch 1 Olympic cycle, 1 World champs cycle. And now with mixed relays, watch the tallies warp once more as quartet prizes and piled up

I agree with Felix. The fact that Paltrinieri swam such a good 800 bodes well for the 1500, where he really shines. Sun is not unbeatable.
