Craig, Looks so far as though the switch of the British trials to early summer has not worked well. Only James Guy has improved on his trials performance. Pretty discouraging.

Early days, Dave… nothing we’ve seen this year or last is just down to where the trials fall … I suspect it will early days this summer to judge that trials move, whichever way the result goes by close of play next Sunday…

Perhaps a non-swimming power like GB shouldn’t have trials at all – they don’t do trials in track cycling where GB is all-powerful, afteral.

Well, with Europeans in London before Rio, perhaps they will select the team based on the best results of the top 2 out of four allowed to race at the continental event… but there may be a few folk who would say it would be unfair not to give them a chance of qualifying … there are also lots of examples down the years of smaller nations who don’t have trials – and don’t swim up at the big event, either. best, C

Dear John

Just a small correction – Katinka Hosszu i not training under David Salo anymore; they parted company after the Olympics last year. She is now training under Shane Tusup – also her fiance – at the Vasas Sports Club in Budapest.

Carlin must have regretted swimming the 400 yesterday.
