Before the week started, the women’s 400 freestyle was expected to be a superb three-way battle between Allison Schmitt, Katie Ledecky and Chloe Sutton. But with Schmitt, the Olympic silver medalist, off her game and scratching the event, Ledecky and Sutton were left to square off in a head-to-head showdown. Ultimately, Ledecky came out on top.

Everyone is talking about Katie not being fully rested and/or tapered. We shall soon see. Jazmin Carlin could very well do to Ledecky what Ledecky did to Adlington last year.

It’s hard to believe she isn’t fully rested when she swam a 1:56 200m free in season and couldn’t match that at the trials. There have also been reports of those in Indy witnessing her take in a 5000m training session in between prelims and finals on her off day. She’ll have her work cut out for her in all the races, but I would agree with the comments in the story. A potential sub 4:00 400m free with the Muffat duel and with Carlin in the 800/1500 those records are at risk as well (by either swimmer).

I don’t believe Muffat is capable of going sub 4:00. Last year she swam also fast but eventually settled for 4:01 at the Olympics. I don’t expect sub 4 minutes from Ledecky either. Probably if she were more focused on mid-distance, like Muffat, but not with the schedule that covers almost every freestyle event. If they can battle it somewhere inside 4:01, it would be an excellent performance as well.

If Ledecky executed an inside 4 minute performance in 400m free even though swimming every freestyle event from 200m to 1500m, it would be an embarrassment to Schmitt, Muffat and even Pellegrini who concentrated themselves on mid-distance.
