I see that at the recent FINA Congress a new Bureau of 25 members was elected. From what I can see, 13 of the members come from countries that did not have a single semi-finalist between them at the recent WC’s. If you hail from Fiji or Uganda or Senegal or some other country which has a nil impact on world swimming what qualifies you to sit on the FINA Bureau? Why do major swimming nations like the USA, Australia, Great Britain etc. tolerate this? I’m just an outsider looking in but it’s obvious to me that swimming is a sport in the doldrums outside of the Olympics due to poor governance and the control exerted by sports politicians from peripheral nations.

Absolutely, longstroke. Ludicrous … but the very reason why all of this could be so easily resolved. It just takes a few of those big nations to say ‘no, not our watch – this ends here’… and it will be over. Without the best swimmers in the world from 2 or 3 key nations, the game is up and the house of cards falls. That’s how fragile they are. And that moment gets ever closer…. like the GDR regime on the eve of the Berlin Wall falling, they hear the mood music but they don’t believe it – and won’t until the first brick drops off the top and a crack rushes through the flakey stuff holding it all up.
