If you’re going to win a European junior 400m medley title, then to do so ahead of two Hungarians in Hungary is always going to be a sign of quality: Hugo Gonzalez, the 200m backstroke crown in the bag, ended his youth years at the continental showcase curtain-closer in Hódmezovásárhely with a 4:17.27 victory. And Italy end on a high with five golds

Karlo Noah Paut of Croatia went sub-50 in the 100 free final, at age 16 … I believe that’s worth mentioning

It was mentioned ThereaL:

A fine effort but without knowing the personal development and physical attributes of this teenager, what happens next is more interesting 🙂

Thank you Craig. I remember that he made the news in 2015 when, before turning 15, he already went sub 51. So you can see the trajectory there. Here is a video of that swim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLBrOzvjDQY&feature=youtu.be

For a comparison, Magnini at the same age was a 55” swimmer … of course, different times, different individuals, different paths, but it’s still impressive. Santana was 18 when he went 48.25, right? This guy might beat that record if he keeps this pace.

I was there in person on Saturday. Great athmosphere, full house (free entry). We arrived 30 mins before the start of the session and we could not find a seat, ended up sitting on stairs but I did not mind.
As former free styler the 100free was the highlight for me. The crowd was amazing when the HUN swimmer won 200fly.
I met a group of coaches and doctors from the Spain team later in a bar in Szeged. We discussed the DQ of their swimmer in 200im. Great weekend.
I cannot wait for the WC 2017 in Budapest next year. It is even closer than Szeged from my hometown.
I will not be sitting on stairs this time.

TommyL

Correction…we were there to watch the Friday finals, not Saturday.

Yes, therealuigi; ‘If’ being a monumental word 🙂

Therea and Tommy,
Is there a YouTube available of this men 100 free final?

aswimfan

Therea,
Santana was 18 when he swam 48.25, but the junior record is Chalmers at 48.03 and he was 17. Chalmers can still lower the record until the end of this year.

TommyL

Not sure about the video ASF.

Karlo Paut was clearly happy with his 3rd place. He was the only swimmer born in 2000 in the final. All the other boys were 2yrs older.

He was sitting on his lane rope holding his fist towars to the CRO team. Great moment.

Perhaps he can achieve something similar like his countryman Duje Draganja in 2004.

Thanks Aswimfan. The video must be somewhere among those uploaded in this channel, but they were lazy enough not to say in the title what was what and I have no time to go through each of them …
