Great write up Craig! No one could have captured the GOATs 30th better than you!

Lennart van Haaften

I expected an article celebrating Phelps’s 30th birthday here today, but not this many! As usual, Swimvortex does not disappoint.

Happy Birthday to the G.O.A.T!

Thanks for the kind notes Rain Maker & Lennart (and for those of others here and through other channels)

He may have enjoyed it in his youth. But between 2005 and 2008 i think he lost his love for it (was around him a bit). Still didn’t have it up to 2012 but there are signs of him regaining it now. Still say he is a lock for 2020. Will be 35 and really at the late-mid or upper level of physical prime. And mentally way more mature than he was in 2004-08.

jman, the results of 2007-2008 suggests he was in a fairly happy/loving it place (he certainly seemed happy when he was winning 🙂 I don’t think you can do what he did without a fair helping of loving what you do, however that may manifest itself. Inevitably, there will be a level of weariness after living life with such intense focus
