It’s awesome that she can defend her Olympic title while still being a teenager.

By the way, I think gay people won’t have as much admiration for her “peace promoting” hero.

This article is about Katie Ledecky, who is a wonderful role-model for young swimmers. Happy Birthday, Katie! I love the way you lead by example, and wish you exceptional luck in your swimming career! However, as a gay man I would like to interject that I myself and many of my gay friends have great admiration for Pope Francis for many reasons, including his accepting and inclusive attitude toward homosexuals.

Danjohnrob, I second what you wrote about the Pope. Well said.

Pope Francis also has a tendency to speak forcefully against corruption and the misuse of funds. The football fan in him probably has a strong dislike of many of FIFA’s actions and I suspect if he was interested in our sport, he would not be overly fond of FINA’s excess either.

Given the papal candidacy pool, he was probably as much of a moderate as we were going to get, and I suspect he played a bit of the long game to get into position to make what he sees as some necessary reforms and a return to the 1970s emphasis on social justice.

Thanks for your comment Danjohnrob, I’m glad to hear that. Clearly the situation is more complicated than I thought and/or my knowledge about his opinions is incomplete.

Lennart van Haaften, No worries! I always enjoy reading your comments; I just slightly disagreed with this particular one. Anyway, GO KATIE!

Please someone convince her to go pro. It’s a tough decision and a risk for some people, not for the best in the world.

Education is very important – she’ll be able to afford any course easily.

Agreed- this is Katie’s time and this is her destiny in her life- her incredible gift.
Other things can be pursued later in her no doubt long and successful life.
