The Roman Empire was in winning form for much of 500 years. We can expect the reign of Gregorio Paltrinieri to be a touch shorter but the mosaic and monument they may build one day in his honour out where Ostia meets the sea will celebrate more than his status as Olympic champion. Paltrinieri’s ambitions include a long reign as world No 1 of 30-lap racing – and a pioneering sub-14:30 swim over 1500m freestyle
