Men’s 1,500 event on the first day of competition?
That’s unusual in these days.

Are those men’s 100 fee results final or semis?
If those are final, then it will be extremely hard for Italy to repeat their bronze medal from Kazan.
I agree with felix in the other article thread. 47.0 makes all other swims look pedestrian, and 48.40 is the new 49.0

Rafael

Final times, Italy seem to be a little off for medal fight.

Brazil a little below of expected, Russia tomorrow we will see the level.

Australia on paper and France are ahead, but Australia has a major underperformance history. After tomorrow with Russia 100 free ended only US will be left.

Also when Russia 100 fly gets defined, we will know for sure the power of the teams who are stronger now (Except US): Australia, France, Japan, Russia, Brazil, RSA, CHINA and GBR. Probably US and 7 of this group will be the finalists.

Rafael

All relays are shaping up for Rio..

In a few days we can guess who will final in each relay..

Craig Lord

Not to forget Marco Orsi, Rafael … 48.4 last year (not there today)

Rafael

What happened to Orsi? And without swimming Trials can he swim at OG?

Craig Lord

Italy has a 3-tier selection process, Rafael (beyond Kazan tickets for Paltrinieri and Pellegrini) – rest can qualify at Italian Nationals in Riccione, the European Championships in London (May) and the Seven Hills meet in Rome (June).

ThereaLuigi

Marco was 48.16 at the end of 2014 but unfortunately never made that leap that I believed him capable of making to go sub48. Now of course being a sub 48 swimmer is the bare minimum for a 100 free sprinter. He is more of a 50 swimmer though.

Never underestimate the Italian relay, they are not the fastest but traditionally they are extremely good at exchanges and can make up the time lost in the pool with 0.0 exchanges …

Craig Lord

Yes, ThereaL – takes four to fire at the very best and get those takeovers just the right side of legal on the day to have a shot at the podium (so many relays find 2 or 3, 4 on the day relatively rare at the peaky end).

Italian men 4×100 free is indeed very reliable and consistent.
In the past 3 years, the swam very well at 2013 worlds, 2014 euros and 2015 world, registering times of around 3:12.5-7
And so if the race in Rio is slow, they certainly can medal, however, if Rio swims into 3:10 territory to medal -which is very much a possibility, I don’t see much chance for Italy.
USA, France and Australia have higher upside potential and can swim 3:10.

ThereaLuigi

Pellegrini just went 53.78 in the 100 free final. That’s a personal best for her in textile, an improvement of half a second. This bodes very well for her 200.

Mark Brownell

Leaving Sun out of it for now, 3 of the top chances in 1500m have VERY similar PBs:
Horton 14:39.54
Cochrane 14:39.63
Paltrinieri 14:39.67

0.13 splitting the 3 of them – closer than any other event, including sprints!

Yozhik

If the PBs are so close to each other then it will be wise to consider what the chances are for mentioned swimmers to approach or to break them:
Cochrane was only once under 15:40 in 2012
Paltrinieri has swum 15:39 twice starting in 2014
Horton broke 15:40 first time this year.

aswimfan

I think Paltrinieri is still favorite at this point, as he has the experience and seems have the most confidence.
That is, leaving Yang out of equation as we have no idea what he is like in the past one year.

ThereaLuigi

Paltrinieri wasn’t happy at all with his time … he said he thought he would be faster.

I think it will be a 4 men race: Horton, Paltrinieri, Jaeger, Sun Yang (if he does indeed swim it ). Cochrane is past his time in my mind. Dark horses: Detti and Clark Smith.

Yozhik

Why does it feel so different in women competition. If Ledecky’s 15:25 looks like it will stay for ages, then when a male swimmer performs at low 15:40 then it looks like the next step is to break world record. Same 13 seconds.

Yozhik

* 14:40 of course 🙂
