Furniss Happy Its Been A Challenging Week For GBR

Bill Furniss

New Britain Head Coach Bill Furniss, mentor to Rebecca Adlington, made no apologies for the tough line on selection to World Championships at trials ended in Sheffield this evening. “It’s been uncomfortable and challenging for swimmers and coaches: that was purposeful, dare I say it”; he adds: “It does not matter what we do here: that’s the important message to swimmers and coaches. It matters what we do in four weeks in Barcelona.”

Not again. Every time he has been interviewed since his appointment, Mr. Furniss has – in print or on video – used the meaningless phrase “going forward/s” or “moving forward/s”. (Ditto Chris Spice and Ross Davenport to a lesser extent.) Are we supposed to be impressed by vacuous management non-speak? It’s always there on the end of a phrase, often incongrously, and always suggests “I’m saying this phrase because other people do and I need to say something with no detail.” I suppose we’ll get all the cliches like “robust framework” in the future.Swimmers and coaches are brilliant at what they do but put don’t put them in front of a microphone!
