Femke Heemskerk and the Dutch 4x200m freestyle relay are building speed for Rio 2016: at the SwimCup Eindhoven, Heemskerk clocked 1:55.85 for victory in the 200m freestyle, the time lifting her up to 6h in the world so far this season. Out in 26.91 and 56.55 by half-way, the Montpellier-based international coached by Philippe Lucas,…

It looks that Heemskerk is moving in right direction, but not that impressive as it was expected. I hope that there was no need to swim faster here and she is targeting to challenge Sjostrom at Europenian Championship.
100m race will help to be more conclusive about Femke’s current form since it can be a competition between three swimmers for two spots.

I hope Heemskerk is not targeting to challenge Sjostrom at European Championships.
Likewise, I hope Sjostrom is not targeting to challenge Heemskerk there.

In Olympics year, and just a few months before the Olympics, Euros is not important at all. I hope they train through it, and reserve the full taper for Rio only.

Craig Lord

Yes, aswimfan – Americans won’t be tapering til June… and then holding it… trials, euros, games, 3 tapers going in, not the best idea…(unless you happen to be one of those rather unique swimmers who can smash it up at a speed most can’t manage just about every time you take to your blocks)

DDias

aswimfan,
I doubt about that. They will be probably semi-rested at most. The risk is too big to waste time in a minor competition. Many of them will be very worried about things like Rio night schedule and minor tweaks in their swim.

aswimfan

Yes, to CL and DDias,
I agree that both heemskerk and sjostrom will only be semi-rested at most at Euros, considering the fact they got their tickets to Rio. Euros will likely be used as race pace training, not only by Sarah and Femke but also any other swimmers who have qualified for Rio.

Yozhik

If all you think that Hemskeerk is rested now then it is not good. I thought that like Sjostrom she will be tapered somewhere in spring to test her conditions. And it could be either this Cup or European Championships. Slow times at this meet indicate that she either is not tapered yet or …..

Craig Lord

Knowing how coach Lucas works, I’d doubt very much that she is fully rested, Yozhik, at this stage (would make no sense, she can qualify for NED at Rio with some ease)

aswimfan

I agree with Craig.
She has no opponent in 200 and she’s still a lot faster than Steenbergen in 100, so I don’t think she’s fully tapered here.
And it makes no sense whatsoever to taper for Euros.

Craig Lord

Yes, aswimfan, Euros will be a taper moment for people who won’t make it to Rio or want to target an event at which they have a more realistic chance of making the podium, Rio a stretch too far. For those who want medals in Rio, Euros will be a fast but ‘easy speed’ moment. There will be some exceptions to that, I would imagine… with London fast but Rio faster still (but we’ll only know that come the hour 🙂 London is also a Rio qualification event for some, so they’ll be rested to make sure.

Yozhik

So in your (CL,asf) strong opinion there is no reason for Heemskerk to be tapered at any meet prior Rio. Actually not only for Femke but for anyone who has no problem to be on Olympic team. Sure it makes sense. Great, indisputable sense. Then how stupid it was for Sjostrom not to see obvious advantage of your logic. And what Femme was thinking about showing the best of her times year ago right at this time of the year. Those celebrities are absolutely spoiled , don’t listen to common sense and do whatever they want. What are their parents looking at?

aswimfan

Yozhik,
you are very funny. I believe that Femke is not fully tapered in this Eindhoven cup.
I think she may be rested, but definitely not fully tapered.

Go have a look at Japan trials. Both swimmers who have been guaranteed Rio tickets due to being world champion (Kanako Watanabe and Daiya Seto) also swam well below their PBs/world championships times. Do you think they are fully tapered?
I don’t.
If both Watanabe and Seto were fully tapered here, they may as well shouldn’t be bothered to go to Rio.

I don’t know the deal with Sjostrom. Every swimmer has their own program. Are you absolutely sure she was fully tapered for the Swedish open?
Because while she was reportedly tapered here (unclear if it’s full or partly), she was reported in some other swimming sources as being not tapered for the meet.
My guess is in between: she was partly tapered.
