If I’m not mistaken, this is by far Gyurta’s fastest ever outside olympics/worlds or his own national trials.

Is this an ominous sign that he’ll go faster than ever in Kazan?
Or is this just a sign that his training as an older swimmer is now a bit different, in similar fashion to Lochte’s ?

Aswimfan – Gyurta usually has one fast 200 per year leading up to each major meet. Perhaps he is opting for this one as opposed to his trials? He may be pre-selected for Worlds. If that’s the case, 2:08 is pretty typical for him. Nevertheless, I really do hope he is faster than ever in Kazan (and Rio).

aswimfan, I’d imagine he has in mind faster than ever on the way to an Olympic year in a world that has others capable of going 2:06. Daniel’s swim was indeed, as you note, best ever away from the majors, 2:08.72 at Hungarian nationals last year his best until Bergen, so we may have been watching a trials-like swim, as Tristar suggests.
