But geez, the weather out there in the summer is brutal and I mean BRUTAL.

Can’t be more brutal than what’s going to be at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Temperatures up to 50 °C (122°F) are expected. 🙂

To the topic at hand, I’m sure Washington possesses best chances of the US candidates from general perspective (seen from a distance). I’m not aware of the details that may change a situation.

Maybe not all the effort by candidate cities is wasted if one just keep bidding. Tokyo and Madrid submitted bids also for 2016 Olympics, and Madrid become rejected already in its bid for 2012 Games. A recent survey on the public support for the 2020 Games in Japan showed a significant improvement in support relative to the earlier statistics which has previously been considered to be Tokyo’s Achilles heel. As a result of that I’ve a strong feeling Tokyo, deservedly, takes it. If Tokyo doesn’t win and they keep bidding, Tokyo will be tough to beat for anyone as for 2024 Games.

I would like to see San Francisco/The Bay Area be the American bid. Arguably the US’s most aesthetically beautiful city and perhaps more appealing internationally than DC with all it’s political symbolism/baggage.
