“There has never been a sprint season like Campbell’s.”
Is that based on the number of top 10 swims in a season? Inge de Bruijn in 2000 swam 6 world records over 50 and 100 free LC and won both titles at the Olympics, which I would personally rank ahead of Campbell’s 2013, but I don’t know about her top 10 swim record that year. Alshammar was fast too.

Either way, a superb season and hopefully Campbell will be able to beat the suit WR next year in the 100.

Lennart – based purely on speed and the number of quality moments in the season … it is the fastest set of times we have ever seen and the greatest number of quality swims … Inge’s 2000 season in the 100m was this at the helm:
53.77 OLYMPICS
53.80 SHEFFIELD MAY
53.83 Olympics
54.01 Local meet, July
54.59 Monaco in May

The best 4 were her ‘only’ [for want of a better term 🙂 ] 4 entries in the top 15, the 54.59 at No16 that year.

Campbell has 8 swims within a second of the world-textile best she set in Barcelona, which is in fact the swimming world record, the shiny suit one really not of the same world. Campbell also has 12 swims beyond her 52.33 within 1.3sec … that speed and depth of quality has never been seen before as I trawl back through 30 plus years of rankings. That was the context of it.

best, Craig

Thanks, Craig, for elaborating. You convinced me. And if we omit suits records, she actually did go under last season’s textile WR of 52.75 no fewer than three times.

A decent amateur video of women’s 100m at Worlds. Cate’s 2nd 25-metres is stupendous. It seems that the whole difference she made came within that distance:
