Caeleb Dressel set the thunder rolling with a 47.22 opener after his 21.15 gold in the 50m free and his 49.86 blast ahead of history in the 100m butterfly (more on that soon). Nathan Adrian was next in, 47.49; then Mallory Comerford, 52.71, before Simone Manuel clocked 52.18 for a combined 3:19.60 that set the first real world standard that others must now aspire to in the fledgling event
