Caeleb Dressel by Patrick B. Kraemer

As we invite readers to make their choices in our SwimVortex Awards for 2017, we reflect on the campaigns of the four most outstanding turns of the showcase event of the year, the World Championships, held in Budapest in July. The four: Katie Ledecky (USA) Sarah Sjostrom (SWE), Adam Peaty (GBR) – and the swimmer of the 2017 world titles, Caeleb Dressel (USA), the third off four children born to Christina and Michael Dressel. At 15, young Caeleb placed 145th in the 50m freestyle and 152nd in the 100m freestyle at U.S. Olympic trials. Within three years, he was a world junior champion – and then he took time out of the water. When he returned, he did so as a Gator with coach Gregg Troy in a place where the rule is “all in – or get out”. He got in. All in. It showed this summer in Budapest. World textile bests in the 50m free and 100 ‘fly, the latter as first man inside 50sec without the pull of poly and her kettle; and 7 golds in the mix
