A Little Halloween Fun Shows Phelps’ Continued Influence

Being Michael Phelps for Halloween only emphasized his far-reaching influence on the sport. “Since the students know of my affinity for the sport and my involvement on a journalistic level, it finally hit me: I’ll toss on a Team USA cap, a pair of goggles, drape a bunch or medals around my neck and a towel over my shoulder. Voila! I’ll be Michael Phelps” – John Lohn

Great article, John. But that one dad sure got my imagination back into full swim saying that Spitz might have been better. Sure wish there was a way of pitting those two against one another at their level best. Talk about battle of the titans!

As Mark Spitz himself commented, Phelps was the first man on Mars. No contest.

Phelps is the GOAT of swimming!

it’s only 1 year into his retirement. even 10 year olds can remember last year, and it’s possible some of them remember 2008 even. if he has a truly lasting influence we’ll see if your kids know about him 5 years from now, when he’s been 6 years retired and they weren’t even alive in ’08

Craig Lord

They’ll remember him … impossible to ignore the most successful Olympian ever … the world is reminded every four years at the very least… and a healthy proportion of the audience will be kids who are inspired to do something for themselves (including some of the many now going through the Michael Phelps Swim School and bing helped by his foundation…). I think there is a very strong chance that his legacy will outlive we who were there to witness it all

I think we will see his influence if attendance at swim meets as well as those going into competitive swimming rises. The US trials in Indianapolis were an attendance disappointment without Phelps there. Not a good sign. I hope Missy Franklin continues to be popular. She is an excellant role model for kids.

Phelps is more than the Greatest of all time !! he IS swimming, he changed and revolutionized swimming so much that he will be remembered for a long time again !! a bit like spitz was still remembered !!

Winning 18 gold medals is not something you can easily forget =D
